This is a condensed version of Duck Creative's full Ad Research Master Reference — the most actionable frameworks for Meta ad creative strategy at scale. Stripped down for fast reading.
These 9 principles are consistent across Depesh Mandalia, Cody Plofker, Dara Denney, Nick Shackelford, Barry Hott, Nick Theriot, Manel Gomez, Spencer Pawliw, Alex Cooper, Carl Weische, and Savannah Sanchez.
1. Creative is the only targeting lever that matters.
Post-Andromeda, creative does the targeting work. Manel Gomez: "Creative = targeting." Nick Theriot: "Broad is the only system to scale to $30K+ days if your creatives are strong." Meta finds the right person through creative signals — not audience settings.
2. Broad targeting beats over-segmentation.
All experts use broad targeting as default at scale. No interest stacks. No lookalikes as primary targeting. Manel Gomez: €2.6M in spend documented on broad-only 4-campaign structure.
3. Hook is the single highest-leverage creative element.
First 3 seconds = everything. Alex Cooper benchmark: 62–68% hook rate = strong. Nick Theriot: below 20% = kill. Barry Hott and Dara Denney: hook rate is an iteration signal, not a pass/fail.
4. Concept diversity beats volume.
Spencer Pawliw: 10+ completely different concepts. Manel Gomez: "Diversification does not imply volume." Alex Cooper: angle stagnation — not volume shortage — is why brands plateau.
5. Customer language beats marketing language.
Every expert arrives here: reviews, Reddit, comments, DMs. The customer's raw unfiltered words are the best copy. Always.
6. Don't kill ads too fast.
Barry Hott: check amount spent first. Depesh: spend ~2x target CPA before making a call. Manel Gomez: 2–3 purchases below KPI before promoting; zero purchases after spend = cut fast.
7. Find winners first, then scale.
Manel Gomez names this Phase 1 vs Phase 2. Every expert embeds the same logic: you cannot apply scaling tactics to unproven creative.
8. Ugly / native / authentic beats polished.
Barry Hott (most extreme), Spencer Pawliw, Nick Theriot, Nick Shackelford all document lo-fi outperforming polished production. Apple Notes screenshot at $47 CPL vs. $800 video at $340 CPL.
